The 5S system is often considered the basis of the Lean methodology. The 5S system is designed to improve the physical and informational work environment and consists of five consecutive steps, each of which begins with the letter S.
The application of the 5S system allows us to significantly improve the level of order in our work environment and thus achieve better work efficiency by eliminating numerous wastes related to the search for work tools or information, reducing the likelihood of errors, improving work safety, etc.
The implementation of the 5S system is a good test of the maturity of an organization—it is an excellent opportunity to learn how to implement and maintain important changes together. When implementing 5S, essentially all employees of the organization are involved in the improvement of operations, and this experience becomes a good initial training ground for the practical application of the Lean system.
